Giovanni tells us of the bull jumping ceremony of the Hamar Tribe: “If you are a boy and if you were born in the Omo Valley area of Ethiopia and if you belong to the Hamer tribe, well, one day, you will be asked to become a man. That day you will have to run on the backs of the bulls, showing to all the people of your family and tribe your strength.

“The “Bulls Jumping” is the main ritual event at the end of a three days tribal ceremony, during which the young boys have the opportunity to become men and to be entitled to take a bride. The ceremony calls back all the tribes that are settled in the Omo Valley, and this is the occasion to build relations between families and clans.”

“The women, shaking their braids kneaded with butter and red soil, dance all together and sometimes one of them, usually a relative of the boy, performs a proof of courage: with small dancing steps, she goes in front of a man showing her naked back: he flogs her with a cane till she bleeds, but she silently and proudly endures the pain.”

“In the meantime, the young initiate is surrounded by the men, who encourage him and perform preparatory rituals. Finally the time of the jump; in front of the boy 15 bulls are lined up; he gets the running start and he jumps. If the boy is agile and brave enough to leap over the backs of the bulls 4 times without fail, he will come back to his tribe no more as a boy but as a man.”
