A Trip to Biei, Hokkaido with Photographer Courtney Esson
Courtney takes us with her on her trip to Biei, Hokkaido: ”The small town of Biei in Japan’s most Northern main Island, Hokkaido, is filled with picturesque landscapes merely waiting to be captured and explored. It’s winding countryside lanes lie between endless rolling fields where the trees are famous for creating simple compositions. This desolate and timeless canvas is heaven for minimalist winter photography.”
“Trudging through the hills, I searched for clean and simplistic frames to present this postcard-ready town. Naked trees stood among deep, untouched snow while photogenic nature quietly passed. The bright sun bounced off the white snow making it easy to overexpose images accidentally. This quiet rural town seemed to hand the scenery to you, making my only concern the cold biting my hands and navigating the snow-filled paths.”
“Abrupt heavy snowfalls seemed determined to keep the town painted white. Snow battered my camera lens making capturing an image challenging but giving the sense of having stepped into a wonderland.
I parted from Biei with contentment, images of nature at its finest and the desire to experience its other seasons.”
